Tunisian Tuesday

Last week I worked on a swatch of Tunisian crochet. This is my first attempted at Tunisian crochet, EVER. I started with the Tunisian simple stitch:

I was so pleased at how easy this was to learn & execute. I have yet to try binding off (finishing off the project) , because the hook I am using (size H8 5mm) is too small and the project does roll up very badly (just as the tutorials mentioned crochet would do with a small hook, hence why I am holding the swatch down in the photos). So I made another trip to my Hobby Lobby & purchased a size K (6.5 mm) afghan hook by Yarnology. I am going to undo this project & start over with my new hook in hopes this will prevent the work from rolling up.
I will try this stitch again & get back to you next Tuesday with my progress. Once I get a good hang of the stitch, I hope to make my own tutorial for anyone interested. Check in again next Tuesday to see my progress with Tunisian crochet!
I hope you have a wonderful day!
God bless!

Daylight Savings' Monday

my instagram
I hope you all (in the U.S. who follow Daylight Savings) were able to get going this morning after the time change. I was reading my daily devotional, Morning & Evening by C.H. Spurgeon, this morning & the morning verse for today is Psalms 30:6. I thought I was share the whole chapter of Psalms 30:

1 I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up
    and have not let my foes rejoice over me.
2 O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,
    and you have healed me.
3 O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;
    you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.[a]
4 Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints,
    and give thanks to his holy name.[b]
5 For his anger is but for a moment,
    and his favor is for a lifetime.[c]
Weeping may tarry for the night,
    but joy comes with the morning.
6 As for me, I said in my prosperity,
    “I shall never be moved.”
7 By your favor, O Lord,
    you made my mountain stand strong;
you hid your face;
    I was dismayed.
8 To you, O Lord, I cry,
    and to the Lord I plead for mercy:
9 “What profit is there in my death,[d]
    if I go down to the pit?[e]
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it tell of your faithfulness?
10 Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!
    O Lord, be my helper!”
11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
    O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Have a wonderful Monday!

Forget about Winter, Spring is coming..

Here we are at the second weekend in March 2014. I definitely have spring fever! ("I have a fever, & the only prescription is more cow bell". Am I the only one who thinks that when they hear the word fever?) The weather has been cold and wet this past we, but the experts are forecasting a sunny weekend with spring like temperatures for my part of North Carolina. Oh joy!
I don't have anything on my calendar, expect breakfast out with my brothers for tomorrow, & church on Sunday followed by a choir boot camp (it is not as intimidating as it sounds).
I will try and be disciplined and take some pretty pictures for the blog this Saturday & Sunday since the weather will be beautiful.
I am really enjoying my first attempt at Tunisian crochet. I am so excited at all the new creative possibilities!
What are your weekend plans? I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
God bless!

Beginning Tunisian Crochet with Me

I decided to try something new; Tunisian crochet. For those of you who are not familiar with this technique, it is basically as if knitting and crochet met one day, fell madly in love, got married, & had a beautiful baby. That baby would be Tunisian crochet. Tunisian crochet, also known as Afghan crochet, is a combination of knitting and crochet. In Tunisian, one uses a long crochet hook to make stitches that are similar to stitches found in knitting.
Now, for your information, I have not yet attempted this lovely art. I have merely purchased some materials in hopes of learning the craft & I plan on posting about what I have learned in the future. I discovered Tunisian crochet about two years ago on-line and thought that the stitches were so beautiful that I wrote a short post with some photos of Tunisian crochet swatches I liked. That is now my most viewed post on my blog. I have wanted to learn Tunisian for years now and realized that there are many people on the web wanting to learn the same. So I thought I should write about what I learn as I learn it  in hopes of teaching anyone interested about my new skills (well, that is my hope :-/). I plan on posting every Tuesday for the next few weeks about my Tunisian crochet shenanigans (Tunisian Tuesdays!).
 Last Friday I headed to my local Hobby Lobby & picked up a few things.

Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn in the colors glacier & antique white. & a 5 mm double-end crochet hook
by Susan Bates
Molly had to check out my stash

Now, I have see that most people do use a afghan hook (a long crochet hook with a stopper on the end) apposed to the double ended hook I purchased. I don't know why I purchased the double ended hook instead of the afghan hook. When I was shopping at Hobby Lobby, I heard over the intercom that the store was closing in 15 minutes, so I panicked and went with the double end. I know that I heard that you can use this for Tunisian crochet. But I did realize on Saturday morning after watching a Youtube video about Tunisian, that instead of going back and forth with your stitches like in "traditional" crochet, one works only on one side without turning your work. An afghan hook would have a stopper on the one end and would help me know which is the right side to work on. (First Tunisian fail). But if need be, I will use a stitch marker to help me know which is the the beginning of my work. Another thing I learned AFTER I went shopping was that some people recommend using a larger Tunisian crochet hook for your yarn than that is recommend on the packaging for a "regular" crochet hook. Example if the yarn instructions call for a 5 mm crochet hook, you should go up 3 mm in a Tunisian crochet hook. I didn't do this (second fail, maybe). What was said is that smaller hooks can cause major rolling in your Tunisian crochet work. I am going to try a project first with my 5 mm hook and see how I do before I go pick up a new hook. *sigh* Learning experience, people; it builds character.
Any who, I will let you know how my first attempted at Tunisian goes next Tuesday!
Are there any readers that have experience with Tunisian crochet? I would live to hear any of your advice & or tips.
God bless!

shell stitch cowl

I hope you have enjoy the first couple days of March 2014! I have.
I finished this infinity scarf for my mom this weekend. I had the majority of a skein of Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn left over from a previous project & thought it would make a good cowl for my mama. She is hot natured, so I thought an open stitch would work best for her.
This is a photo from my phone I posted to my instagram on Saturday

These are photos I took with my "real" camera.

It was very overcast when I took these photos early this morning, so I apologize for the poor lighting. Also, the scarf would had looked better if I could of had it hanging, but I had no one to wear it when I took this photo. I need a pretty cloths hanger or a dress form to use when taking photos of scarves and such. *sign* Oh well, maybe some day.
I used this crochet shell stitch graph from Lion Brand as a guideline & adjusted it a little by using one double crochet or a chain 3 on the ends of each row to square it off.
Maybe I can get a better photo of this cowl some other day.
I am going to make some more cowls like this in different colors with some of my extra yarn. This is an easy project so I thought it would be a good idea to make a few more and have ready to sell in the fall.
I know I would like to make a tutorial entry someday, & maybe this stitch would be an easy one for my to explain in a tutorial post. Do any of you have an opinion? I would love to hear it.

Y'all have fun today!
God bless!
